DAMN FLAMIN
Prototype for a Candle Holder
Status: Prototype, Work in Progress, 2026
Damn Flamin is a candle holder that pays homage to Dan Flavin’s light works sculpture. It further strips down over-the-counter fluorescent tubes into sheet metal that holds the most primitive source of artificial light in humanity.
Dan Flavin, Untitled, 1969
“It’s a tasty irony that, in emphasizing the accessibility and plainness of his materials, Flavin ended up hoarding them (fluorescent tubes) like Romanov diamonds and relying on a team of semi-artisanal specialists—so tasty that I wish he’d mixed it into his art instead of burying it in his diaries.” - Jackson Arn, The New Yorker, Feb 28, 2023

Detail & Atmosphere
The prototype intends to be produced in parts and readily assembled with the most basic home tools. The detailing was carefully considered to commit to the referential proportion and visual effect of a mystical illumination.
Positioned in the corner, which is often occupied by shadow and darkness, Damn Flamin flips the narrative by obscuring the source of light with a recognizable icon.
Industrial stainless steel evokes an austere spirituality while providing warmth through the flickering impermanence of a burning candle.
Damn Flamin redefines the domestic corner to measure time with a descending glow for the everyday mundane rituals.
